🏆 About Terra Ferma

Terra Ferma has called Colorado Springs home since 2009. The company specializes in rapid prototyping, advanced engineering, and manufacturing solutions for LiFi — a wireless communication technology that transmits data using light rather than radio frequencies. Unlike conventional Wi-Fi, LiFi signals are contained within physical spaces, making them significantly harder to intercept or detect from outside a room. That security advantage is a major selling point for Terra Ferma's core customer base: the U.S. military and government, NATO, and a range of domestic and international government and private end users.

The new facility will remodel and refurbish an existing building near Peterson Space Force Base and focus on manufacturing the small electronic components that power LiFi capabilities. The company recently partnered with French firm OLEDCOMM SAS, a manufacturer of LiFi components, to accelerate production. Terra Ferma also collaborates with ITS, LLC, a Colorado Springs-based IT engineering company that provides domain expertise for defense-sector applications. The Colorado Economic Development Commission approved up to $1,010,584 in performance-based Job Growth Incentive Tax Credits for the company over eight years, contingent on meeting job creation and salary targets. El Paso County estimates Terra Ferma is eligible for an additional $219,272 in state income tax credits through the Colorado Enterprise Zone program.

The 120 new roles will pay an average annual wage of around $68,108, which is 107% of the average annual wage across El Paso County. For a company that currently employs just nine people (eight of them already in Colorado Springs), this represents a more than 13-fold expansion of its local workforce.

🔥 Job Opportunities at Terra Ferma

The new LiFi manufacturing facility is building out across three broad hiring categories, with roles suited to candidates ranging from recent graduates to experienced engineers. Below is a breakdown of the positions Terra Ferma is adding as the facility scales up:

  • ⚙️ Manufacturing Engineers — Core technical staff responsible for developing and refining the production of LiFi hardware components. Candidates with backgrounds in electronics, photonics, or systems manufacturing are well-positioned.
  • 🔬 Engineers (Advanced/R&D) , Terra Ferma's rapid prototyping work requires engineers capable of translating military and government communications requirements into deployable hardware solutions.
  • 📦 Warehouse and Logistics Staff , The new facility needs team members to manage materials, components, and finished goods. These roles are among the more accessible entry points into the company.
  • 💼 Sales Representatives , With customers spanning the U.S. military, NATO, and international government end users, Terra Ferma is building a sales team capable of managing complex defense and government procurement relationships.
  • 🎯 Marketing Professionals , Supporting the company's expansion into new customer segments, including potential future commercial applications of LiFi technology.
  • 🛠️ Manufacturing Technicians , Hands-on production floor roles assembling and testing LiFi components, ideal for candidates with electronics assembly or precision manufacturing backgrounds.
  • 📞 Customer Service Staff , Terra Ferma is building out its support infrastructure, including customer-facing roles to handle government and commercial account relationships.

⚡ Why Colorado Springs, and Why Now

Terra Ferma's decision to build here wasn't random. The company evaluated sites in Florida, Virginia, and Wyoming before settling on Colorado Springs, citing the city's deep pool of engineering and technical talent and its unmatched proximity to Department of Defense assets. Peterson Space Force Base sits essentially next door to the planned facility, and the broader Pikes Peak region houses Fort Carson, Schriever Space Force Base, NORAD/USNORTHCOM, and a dense network of defense contractors who represent natural partners and customers for LiFi communications technology.

Colorado Springs tech employment is also on an upswing. Tech jobs in the city are forecast to grow 2.5% this year after a modest dip in 2025, and the region earned recognition as the No. 2 Top Emerging Market for Tech Talent in North America by CBRE in 2024. Terra Ferma's expansion adds to a momentum story that includes significant CHIPS Act investments, a growing cybersecurity cluster, and a pipeline of defense-adjacent startups moving through local accelerator programs. For job seekers with manufacturing, engineering, or government sales backgrounds, the timing is good.
